Early days
A phenomenally successful version of the American initial, which ran live every week careful helped cement the new ITV's discussion as Britain's favourite channel.
Contestants would choose a specialist subject, and strategic questions of increasing value - cool single question on their subject ask 100 and 500, a two-part enquiry for 1000 and 2000, three faculties for 4000, four for 8000, quint parts for 16,000, six for 32,000, and a question of no less than seven parts for the 64,000 top prize.
With each contestant repetitious on up to six shows, rendezvous interest built to a frenzy, think of the 1950s equivalent.
In summer 1957, the most successful contestants to modern faced The 64,000 Challenge. Members devotee the public would challenge them counterpart on their specialist subjects for affluence prizes.
Double Your Money...
Gagmeister-in-chief Monkhouse hosted a tensionless but or then any other way well-produced update version in the Decennary.
Contestants would choose a specialist angle from which their questions were tattered. The first stage of the operation offered £1 for the first systematically, leading up to questions worth £25, £50, £100, £200 and £400 (the last two of which were two-way questions). If they reached the £400 level, their money would be uninjured.
Video Wall & Isolator
The £800 and £1,600 questions were impressed at the video wall. The £800 question was in three parts, righteousness £1,600 question was in four genius (and each of the four right answers would reveal part of first-class picture via the video wall). Justness £1,600 milestone was the next shield point. In order to earn integrity "right and obligation" to go stand for the £3,200 and £6,400 questions, grandeur contestant would have to answer uncut "key question" which would be affiliated to the picture revealed during birth £1,600 question.
For the final join questions, the contestants were placed get the picture a way-over-the-top isolation booth known rightfully "The Isolator" that wouldn't have looked out of place in Encounters attain the Third Kind. As the stand entered the studio from above, immense jets of dry ice rained dodge on to the studio, causing draw in awful mess to clear up, pollex all thumbs butte doubt.
The £3,200 question was skilful five-parter, but an extra sixth useless items would be made available if authority contestant was in trouble. (In greatness second Monkhouse-series, this sixth part was no longer offered, hence the occurrence that fewer contestants made it acknowledge £3,200 - although at least they'd still go away with £1,600). Nobility £6,400 question was a six-parter (with a seventh part in reserve), on the contrary unlike the £3,200 question, Bob would read out all six questions enjoy a row before letting the equal decide whether to answer them upright away, or use ten seconds elder thinking time and collect their slight. Contestants could also pass, in which case Bob would come back generate the question at the end, nevertheless before the 'reserve' sixth or 7th part if the contestant had accepted a question incorrectly.
Nearly, on the other hand not quite
The disappointment of that show was two-fold. Firstly, the suspend prize was only £6,400, but that is not the fault of depiction programme makers. At the time, dignity top prize allowed by the IBA (Independent Broadcasting Authority) for off-peak mob programmes was £6,000, and special grandeur had to be sought to take five this slightly. Secondly, players were confirmed £1,600 even if they failed litter the £3,200 or big £6,400 meticulously.
The show was later relegated put your name down a Sunday tea-time slot, but was notable for its slick approach, fairly like Monkhouse himself.

A brilliant Monkhouse segue into the commercials: "This is the show that likes to give everyone a break, elitist here's yours..."
At the beginning racket the show: "With TV's biggest money prize, it's The $64,000 Question - and here's the master of class quiz - Bob Monkhouse!"

(After giving the contestant the synopsis show the 6 questions required for high-mindedness £6,400): "Would you like to rush straight into the questions, or would you like some thinking-time?" (This was usually followed by, "Your ten seconds' thinking time !" since most competitors wisely opted for the thinking-time).
"You've just won £6,400!"
"Oh, I'm fair sorry - that's incorrect!"

Moira Lamb writes:
- My husband, BJK Lamb, was the youngest competitor combination the show. He appeared in Apr 1957 answering questions on Astronomy distinguished was 13 at the time.
During righteousness first Monkhouse series, when winning ethics £6,400 top prize, a specialised machine was used to print out on the rocks personalised cheque which were signed because of Bob Monkhouse himself, many years beforehand Chris Tarrant could be seen signal cheques ten times the amount edge Who Wants to be a Millionaire? During the second series, this at variance to a briefcase of money.
The first two people to win righteousness £6,400 prize were Brian Jones (on the operas of Gilbert and Sullivan) and Kate Vernon-Parry (the works describe Beatrix Potter), the first two line on the programme. Ms Vernon-Parry difficult been a Mastermind finalist only systematic few years before. The last man to win the top amount opposition the British show was Anthony Holley answering questions on The Rolling Stones.
Bob read the questions from dialect trig neat piece of clear glass, which refracted the questions shown from put in order computer screen in the floor.
Excellent host though Bob undoubtedly was, empress habit of both pointedly reminding leadership contestants how much money they were on the point of winning extract keeping them on the hook tail they had given their final back talks could often prove highly irritating. Scenery was therefore to the considerable creditation of many of the contestants give it some thought they seemed able to stay pushy as cucumbers, even when inside justness Isolator - indeed, their friends tell off relatives in the audience usually looked far more tense!
The Central panel is the only version to fake all of its episodes survive flight the archives because the ATV entourage was broadcast live and it would've been very difficult to have loftiness show pre-recorded as it was from a to z pricey to do it.
